Jimmy Nardello – Capsicum annuum
The Jimmy Nardello is a cherished Italian heirloom brought to the U.S. in 1887 by the Nardello family from Ruoti, Italy. Named for their son Jimmy, the family’s most devoted gardener, this beloved variety has been preserved for generations thanks to its incredible sweetness and versatility. Plants grow low, wide, and extremely productive, often needing support as they load up with long, slender peppers that ripen from green to a glossy fire-engine red. Pods typically reach 6–10" long, with thin skins, slight wrinkling, and a crisp, rich sweetness—earning the pepper a place in Slow Food’s Ark of Taste. Exceptional for frying, roasting, drying, pickling, or adding mild sweetness to dishes, this heat-free pepper remains a favorite among chefs, gardeners, and anyone who appreciates true old-world flavor.
Heat level: 0 to 500 SHU – Mild.
