Purple Pumpkin - (Capsicum annuum) - Seeds
The Purple Pumpkin pepper (Capsicum annuum) is a stunning ornamental variety with uniquely shaped pods resembling upside-down pumpkins. These peppers grow upright and showcase an extraordinary color progression as they ripen—from dark purple to lavender, peach, orange, and finally bright red. For the sweetest flavor, the pods are best harvested when fully red, offering a crisp texture with medium heat below that of a jalapeño. Highly productive and early to yield, Purple Pumpkin thrives in pots of all sizes, producing even more abundantly in larger containers. Its vibrant hues, coupled with its sweet, mild heat and beautiful flowers, make it perfect for cooking or as a striking garden centerpiece.
Heat level: 5,000 - 10,000 SHU – Mild/Medium.
Flavor: Sweet & Fruity.
We ordered 9 varieties of seeds from Bohica. I planted them outside in seed trays 03/16/25 in central Texas. Two nights near the end of March we had temps in the 30's, but the days were in the 60-70's. All had at least 2 seeds sprouted in 15 days. Here are the results on seedlings, all with at least 1 set of true leaves as of 04/20/25. We planted 12 seeds of each variety.
Aji Cachucha Purple Splotched-10 (83% germination)
Chocolate Cherry Bomb-5 (42%)
Datil-7 (58%)
Farmer's Market Jalapeno-5 (42%)
Pink Tiger-5 (42%)
Purple Pumpkin-8 (67%)
Scotch Bonnet Chocolate-7 (58%)
Snow White Habanero-8 (67%)
Sugar Rush Stripey-5 (42%)
There are some clear winners, but we are very pleased with the results as we are only keeping the 2 strongest of each variety and giving away the rest.
